What is a CLAN?

A clan is an organized group of people who play games together. Simple, huh?

So what is a successful clan?

A successful clan is a group of loyal, honest, respectful, dedicated people who share a love for gaming, often spending available time playing games together.

So then, what is an unsuccessful clan?

An ‘unsuccessful clan’ is a clan that does not survive for 6 months. This is caused by a number of factors such as:

1. A power-hungry, controlling, or rude ego-maniac clan leader

2. Clan members who are immature and/or lazy

3. A clan member who is a troublemaker

4. Unresolved Conflicts

5. Lack of Communication

6. Un-loyal members who are “clan hoppers” and “backstabbers”

7. Members thinking that the clan is a “game”

8. Lack of Recruiting

If an unsuccessful clan does not last 6 months, how has [GUN] Clan lasted over 10 years?!!

The answer to this question lies 100% in avoiding the factors that contribute to the destruction of a clan. Let’s refer to the list in the question above:

1. Our clan leader is one of the most open, caring, and giving people on the planet.

2. We do not recruit, accept, or tolerate immature or lazy clan members. All clan members are required to “give back” to the clan. We are tasked with small collateral duties or responsibilities that benefit the clan as a whole. This requires very little time but creates a feeling of ownership and commitment toward the clan.

3. Troublemakers are not tolerate and are dealt with swiftly and decisively.

4. We resolve all internal conflict quickly and with respect to the clan and all members.

5. We hold mandatory monthly meetings in which all members are encouraged to give input. Minutes are recorded from these meetings in case of an excusable absence. We also utilize our awesome FORUM system to maintain an ‘open-door, open-forum’ policy. And, lastly, all members have clan email to facilitate easy contact and communication.

6. We do not tolerate or accept clan-hoppers or backstabbers. If any member travels down this road, they are immediately removed.

7. A clan is not about the game we play. A clan is about the people. Our clan is more like an extended family. We help each other out. We teach each other. We learn from each other. In a word, we RESPECT each other.

8. We hold weekly recruiting time on each game we play. This helps to maintain membership following the natural attrition that occurs due to LIFE.

Wow, that seems a bit structured. Do you still have time for fun?

Good question. Everything that is truly rewarding requires some amount of effort. We share that effort between all members making the level of hard work very small and making the reward huge.

Who makes the decisions for the group? Is it a 'Democracy'?

Well yes and no.

Our group is organized with a Clan Leader, the Senior Council, the Junior Council, and Members. Everyone in the group has input.

The Clan Leader and Senior Council approve all new members and any membership terminations.

Junior Council members are responsible for an individual game title, ensuring that recruiting, competitions, and practices are occurring as planned.

Members have a say in everything except memberships.

Wow. It sounds like you are running a business. Do you have Job Titles?

As a matter of fact, we do. Besides the Clan Leader, we have the following jobs:

1. Webmaster – the Webmaster maintains, modifies, and oversees everything that has to do with the website (including what you are reading right now).

2. Lead Recruiter – the Lead Recruiter ensures that the weekly recruiting sessions are occurring as planned. This position also performs initial interviews for potential new members.

3. Practice Organizers – Each game has a leader, who is a game officer and a member of the Junior Council (unless that person holds a higher position). This person organizes the weekly practice. He/she creates the practice room, may organize a scrimmage against a friendly allied clan, or plans the basic strategy to develop in practice.

4. Battles Coordinator – the Battles Coordinator organizes all tournaments, competitions, and clan battles. He/she is responsible for posting each event on the Clan Calendar and to the applicable FORUMS thread. This position is also responsible for posting results of battles to the governing authority (GameBattles, etc.).

We are not a business. These positions are required to maintain a happy clan.

As a member, what would be my clan responsibilities?

1. Participate ‘in game’.

2. Participate on the website FORUMS (recommended at least 5 times per week for a basic member).

3. Follow all Clan Rules and the Code of Conduct.

4. Communicate

a. In game

b. By email (yes, you have to check your email)

c. Let us know, via the FORUMS, if you will be absent for longer than 2 weeks.

Are you recruiting?

We are always recruiting.

Everyone who wants to join the [GUN] Clan should fill out the online application by clicking on the ‘Join [GUN] Clan’ button on the main page.

We also merge with clans who may want more stability and infrastructure. In these cases, we maintain the [GUN] name while providing leadership positions to the merged clans officers.

All members MUST accept our Rules and Code of Conduct.

Other than that, these members are immediately welcomed into the [GUN] family with full membership privileges.

We do NOT ‘steal’ people from other clans. That is a very low-class maneuver that often leads to a failed clan.

If those members were not loyal to their other clan, why would they be loyal to [GUN]?

I am new (or just not very good) to online gaming. Is there a place within [GUN] for me?

Definitely. We accept all skill levels.

We will openly share everything we know to help increase your level of skill. In the end, we just want to have fun, too.

We are looking more for the right mentality then skill level.

Is there anyone else I can talk to before I apply?

Yes. Of course.

Lead Recruiter: Tony

Webmaster: Jeremy

One last question, if I leave the clan can I later come back?

Yes and No.

If leaving means that you are leaving gaming in general for any reason (going to college, having a baby, getting married, being shipped out to IRAQ, going underway on a submarine, etc.) we do not even consider you gone or out of the clan.

You are just on a 'Leave of Absence'.

If you leave the clan to participate with another clan or to try out starting your own clan, then NO.

This clan does NOT have a revolving door.

We offer every opportunity for every aspect of gaming (on our console of choice).

1. If you want to be a leader - take on more responsibility and you will be promoted. (It takes a lot less work then starting your own clan, trust us)

2. If you want to compete (tournaments, Game Battles, etc.) more - take the lead. The rest of the clan members will follow.
And if there is another reason, communicate it to the group. I am sure we can figure out a way (as a team) to incorporate your desires into our clan environment.

But if you leave, don't look back. If you communicate and leave on good terms, you will always be a friend. But, never a clan member.

This attitude is required to prevent 'clan hopping' or a lack of commitment. It took us a long time to learn this degree of "tough love".
